The Old Days Of Classical Music

By Corey Sanders

In the Medieval times, most forms of musical compositions were made either for the church or in connection to it. Monodic Gregorian chants and plainsongs first developed into having two or three lines during this time, therefore we can say that it was in this era that harmony has first been represented in music and that these were the earliest forms of classical music.

During the Renaissance period, musicians were still some what only dedicated to choral music. However, musicians have already started trying different textural varieties and differences during this time. If you hear some songs from the 15th century, you might recognize a bit of vocal works, very subtle, but without the lyrics.

Soon, people evolved into what you could be called the basic feel of classical music. Composers started to stay away from the mode system of harmonies that had been the main theory for more than three centuries. They started to create towards the organization of their songs into major and minor feels. This imparted the strong feeling of each piece having what we now know as the key.

Classical music eventually was found in the middle of a gold period during the latter half of the 16th century as many capella masses, anthems, psalms, motets, and madrigals were written by the masters of this era.

Furthermore, it was during this period that instrumentals emerged into its own for the first time. Keyboards that distinguished fantasia, dance movement, and different variations came to life and have been running ever since. - 18758
