Austere, vicious, and relentlessly abrasive, like the time and place it depicts. Notch Cavern's screenplay tests the watcher to find humankind amongst the bad and the ugly. Cast includes Gentleman Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, Danny Huston, John Hurt, David Wenham, Leah Purcell, and Richard Wilson. (104 minutes, 2005)

Gator: Not-so-hot continuation to White Lightning, in reference to a due process Dept. representative Weston and moon-shiner ex-con Reynolds out to get the wares on corrupt Southern congressmen. Some excellent action, however overlong and badly created. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Jack Weston, Lauren Hutton, Jerry Reed, Alice Ghostley, Mike Douglas, and Dub Taylor. (116 minutes, 1976)

Bad Santa: Willie Stokes has an interesting gig. Every year he works as Santa Clause on Christmas Eve. When the shops close, Willie and his partner make a big score by breaking into the safe.

Cuba: Entertaining venture film love tale has mercenary Connery reviving an old event with plant supervisor Adams, set contrary to the fall of Batista in late '59. Controller Lester is in pretty excellent form, with most scenes punctua1ed by memorable throw away tads. Cast includes Sean Connery, Brooke Adams, Jack Weston, Hector Elizondo, and Denholm Elliott. (121 minutes, 1979)

The Bourne Ultimatum: In the third movie of the series, Jason Bourne is still being hunted by those who had trained him into the ultimate assassin that he is. Having lost his memory when almost being killed, Bourne is retracing his past to try to understand who he was, and why everyone wants him dead. All his skills are put to the test, as the C.I.A. is relentless in its effort to have him eliminated.

The Soft Skin: Moody story of wedded businessman drawn into disastrous event with attractive commercial airline stewardess; slick direction uplifts elementary structure. Cast includes Francois Truffaut, Francoise Dorleac, Jean Desailly, and Nelly Benedetti. (120 minutes, 1964)

The Bell Jar: Sylvia Plath's essentially un-filmable novel in regards to the fracture-up of an overachiever in the '50s has a few commanding scenes and an excellent supporting behavior by Barrie, however doesn't seriously materialize off. Hassett is well cast although flounders to transfer the dull bravura behavior this film needs. Cast includes Marilyn Hassett, Julie Harris, Anne Jackson, Barbara Barrie, Robert Klein, Donna Mitchell, Jameson Parker, and Thao Penghlis. (107 minutes, 1979)

The Deep 6: Ladd is Quaker naval officer throughout WW2 who remunerates for past non-action by heading treacherous beach mission; Bendix gives willing aid. Cast includes Alan Ladd, Dianne Foster, William Bendix, Keenan Wynn, James Whitmore, Efrem Zimbalist, and Joey Bishop. (105 minutes, 1958)
