Downloading Movies Fast and Cheap

By Frank Jungsy

As the internet has evolved creative entrepreneurs and active innovators have been developing new uses for this exploding technology. A great example is movie downloading. In a few short years the online movie industry has become a huge and growing industry.

Years ago people started exchanging music files online, but with movies the file was just too big. As the internet speeds started to increase this started to change. Then with clever program designs, like Bit-Torrent, movie download times became reasonable, and they have become very popular.

There are tons of sites that offer streaming video, which is a temporary download that you watch as it simultaneously downloads. There is a buffer established to keep the stream going if there is some lag in the download speed.

The poor picture quality you get with many streaming videos is a calculated choice to let more people see the streams. If they have slower internet connections a stream of higher picture quality will not load fast enough and constantly pause as the download catches up.

The people who do P2P (peer to peer) downloading are finding that Hollywood is trying to stop them. Hollywood feels that the sites that offer P2P environments are helping people break copyright laws. The law has not been clarified completely on this issue.

The gray areas of the law are that the access to the equipment that would allow an "illegal' download to occur is not illegal in itself. So providing a person with a Bit-Torrent, for example, would be no different than providing a person with a car. If that person used that car to make a getaway during a robbery, that would not make the sale of the car illegal.

Even companies like Netflix have found a good way to use movie download technology to benefit their membership. They now offer a selection of over 12,000 movies that you can watch unlimited anytime. The format is a streaming download that has buffering technology that will provide you the best picture you internet speed can handle.

Other companies like Amazon are now selling movie titles through a download format. This means no more trips to the video store, just fire up the computer and make your purchase for immediate download. The video store may become obsolete.

Most people won't want to keep their movie downloads on their main hard drive. One option is to use an external drive to build your movie library. The more obvious move is to learn how to burn these downloads to DVD and then you can play them anywhere.

Some download sites provide films that are not up to par as far as picture quality goes. Make sure you read reviews of sites and check the blogs to see what's out there. There is nothing worse than watching a blurry movie.

The movie download industry will only grow and improve. Movies should become even cheaper with this type of delivery system. The big companies are now starting to enter this booming industry, and this should have an impact on everything about buying and renting downloads. This should only benefit us, the consumers. - 18758
