Picking New Pickups For Your Favorite Guitar

By Kylw Zoltowski

The sensual and vibrant sound of electric guitars was the most important creation for rock and roll. In the 50's, this type of music was being experimented with and then in the 1960's and 1970's, that creation was made better until it transformed into rock and roll. The gorgeous sound that comes out of an electric guitar is amazing. It is amazing to ponder where music would have gone if it hadn't been for the creation of the electric guitar; a terrible idea. A band that doesn't have an electric guitar is like a child without its mama.

Electric guitars come in different forms, sizes, colors, and designs. Many believe that it does not bear significance what electric guitar one buys because they all are electric guitars. This is is not the case; brand, size, pickups, and neck matter in the sound that spews from the guitar. Therefore, certain brands of electric guitars remained popular for decades because of the precision that is put into making them. However, the most important part to the sound type is the pickups.

Whether creating a band, jamming solo, or adding more guitars to your band's existing stock, you should learn the different arrangement of pickups for electric guitars before you go out and purchase one. Many stores will be ok with you testing them and can be very helpful in providing facts to help one in choosing the perfect electric guitar. Make sure to learn about the differences in pickups. Thetypes of pickups for electric guitars are:

* Single Coil Pickups - This type of pickup has a single coil. This kinds of pickup remains the oldest of electric guitar pickups. When jamming with a guitar that has a single coil pickup, the sound is compromised by other frequencies in the air which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are rarely seen today but are the choice of a few very well known rockers because of the old style sound they produce.

* Humbucker Pickups - This type of pickup consists of two coils so the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup is killed. Essentially, the coil processes two signals: one that the guitar is producing and one that eliminates the hum. The actual piece in this arrangement is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is the process of two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups - This type in pickups, like the name, include two coils. But, for some reason, guitar players do enjoy the hum sound from time to time so the double coil pickup electric guitars usually come with a switch that can cancel the second coil.

There are of other contributors that go into the sound an electric guitar produces. Though, pickups are the sound makers. Other parts such as: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners make a difference too but not like the pickups. For decades, pioneers have been experimenting the perfect guitar to make the best sound. Rock and roll has changed in some ways but in different ways it has remained indifferent. - 18758
