The Evolving Trumpet

By Jim Samposzi

The trumpet, an instrument belonging to the woodwind or brass collection, is typically made out of brass or bronze and includes: a mouthpiece, horn end, a spit valve, and finger controls. The trumpet is among the instruments that are fully chromatic because trumpets contain three different buttons for tone control. Some of them also have a trigger line to fix any awkward sounds generated by the use of the main note buttons. This line can be pulled while the musician is playing and the difference is so little that it will be unheard when it is used. The spit valve is helpful for releasing any mucus that has built up in the tube just beyond the mouthpiece. The history of this instrument is rather astonishing and they go as far back in time; as far in history as 2000 B.C.

The sound of trumpets are created by the coupling, inclusion, or emission of the three main buttons. The sound generated is possible because of the vibration of your lips via the mouthpiece and then further tweaked by the finger controls before the sound reaches the opening, or end, of the instrument. The development of combinations of tones became very important to the exploration of certain types of music. Seeing as the keys can be changed to produce any sound, all types of music could include a trumpet sometimes.

Trumpets are pitched to go with the soprano section of ensembles. This means, the chromatic range of sounds made go from F sharp all the way to C - before the clef responsible for treble affects. Though, the broad range of options for trumpets are not confined to this range; some musicians can create notes in the G and high C range.

Trumpets, like many pieces of merchandise, come in many styles and brands. Some are preferred over others. Furthermore, and due to this range, they differ widely in price. And, some have other capabilities in pitching that do not come standard. Some of the better known kinds of trumpets include:

Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze

The use of trumpets goes as far back as 2000 B.C. where played in the bands in religious service. The first kinds included things they found to make noise, like: a piece of bamboo, or antler, or bone. The religious books have many references to the trumpet and trumpets were pulled from in the casket of the acclaimed Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. During the 14th century, manufacturers introduced the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of later times where the metal tubing is folded and arched from bell to lip position. The first trumpet was merely straight and long with a horn on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. When operas were popular, the trumpet was introduced in 1607 during a well-known Opera named Orfeo. Later on in history, trumpets were sounded to send military communications but were later seen as a musical instrument. In the 19th century, the trumpet became a must-have instrument during symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz bands, military productions, marching productions, and sometimes rock groups. - 18758
