Discover How To String A Guitar The Right Way

By Jon J Tan

If you play the guitar, you should be aware of how to string a guitar properly. Changing the string on your guitar is definitely a crucial part of the proper maintenance of the guitar. Since it's so easy to do, there is really no reason you need to pay somebody else to change the string for you. You can very easily learn to change it yourself by following a few simple steps.

Before we start, one important thing to note is to always replace the strings one by one rather than all at a time. This ensures that the tension of the neck, body and bridge is kept at a reasonably constant level. If you don't do this, you might change the tension too drastically and this might cause the neck to warp or other damage to the guitar. Here is an overview of the 4 easy steps to replacing the string on your guitar:

1. Loosen the strings. The first step in changing the strings is to start unwinding them. You can start by unwinding the high tension strings first (the thickest ones) but this is a matter of personal preference. If you want to unwind the strings quickly, you might want to purchase a string winder which is the perfect tool for the job.

2. Take off the strings. After you are done with unwinding the string, you can now remove the string from the guitar. The procedure is slightly different depending on what kind of guitar you have. For acoustic guitars, the string is secured by a string peg and you might need some tools to remove the peg. For electric guitars with floating bridges, you mind need to loosen a screw in order to remove the string.

3. Put in the new strings. Putting in new strings is the reverse of the previous step. Again, this step might differ slightly depending on the kind of guitar. Be sure to secure the screw tightly for a floyd rose bridge electric guitar, and secure the string peg securely for an acoustic guitar. You might also need to cut the ball end of the string so it will fit better.

4. You should repeat the above steps for each string and then proceed to tune to guitar to pitch before doing any cutting of the excess string length. Do play with the guitar a bit and perhaps do some strumming in order to season the strings and to be sure that the tuning will not run. - 18758
