Some Quick Film Reviews To View
It used to be that you had to go to the video store to get a movie. These days you can stay at home and get movies from a movie download site. You will find just about any movie you want with a good movie download site. Below is a small sample.
Just Around The Corner: Simple minded comedy with Shirley single handedly ends her state of depression by exploiting the pessimistic lawyer Gillingwater into creating new jobs. Cast includes Shirley Church, Joan Davis, Charles Farrell, Amanda Duff, Bill Robinson, Bert Lahr, and Claude Gillingwater. (70 minutes, 1938)
After Life: This is a beautifully informed story of case workers at a train station between the heavens who help the recently departed pick a lone minute from their pasts to live inside forever. This is a calm, poetic assessment of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and blessedly free of some feel-excellent bromides. Cast includes Aarata, Erika Oda, Susuma Terajirna, Taketoshi Naito, Kyoko Kagawa, Kei Tani, Takashi Naito, and Yusuke lseya. (118 minutes, 1998)
Seizure: Rock's directorial debut is trendy although incoherent shocker in which novelist Frid, his family and buddies are made to play games of death by a trio of wicked weirdoes who may or may not be his bad dreams coming to life. Cast includes Jonathan Frid, Martine Beswick, Christina Pickles, Joe Sirola, Herve Villechaize, Mary Woronov, and Troy Donahue. (93 minutes, 1974)
Hannah Takes The Stairs: This film is every bit as unfocused and self-indulgent as its eponymous heroine. It's a Chicago production organization wage earner gratingly played by Gerwig who drifts through a succession of short-lived relations that aren't romances so much as one night stands. Cast includes Greta Gerwig, Kent Osborne, Andrew Bujalski, Ry Russo, and Mark Duplass. (83 minutes, 2007)
Frequency: John Sullivan lost his father thirty years ago. He is still affected by the loss. Somehow with the use of his father's old ham radio, he can communicate with his father, back when his father was still alive. He warns his father of the fire that would kill him. This saves his father but sets off new events that now must be resolved, or John's mother will die.
Nightmare on Elm Street: A few teenagers find they're all having bad dreams about the same bad guy, scar faced Fred Krueger, a sort of ghost who can enter their dreams at will and attack them while they sleep. It's up to Nancy Langenkamp to try to stop Freddy Krueger. Cast includes Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Glenda Farrell, Allen Vincent, Blunt McHugh, and Arthur Edmund Carewe. (77 minutes, 1933)
Mrs. Doubtfire: Warm and gratifying comedy with earnest overtones in reference to a free spirit whose spouse divorces him after fourteen years. He couldn't bear being split apart from his 3 kids, so he camouflages himself as a dowdy British housekeeper (under an Oscar quality makeup job) and gets himself employed to look after them. Williams is in top form, and director Columbus keeps the tale and characters moderately practical in an effort to drive home a humanistic message. Cast includes Robin Williams, Sally Territory, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Polly Holliday, Lisa Jakob, Matthew Lawrence, and Mara Wilson. (125 minutes, 1993)
So I Married an Axe Murderer: A man who's never been able to commit to marriage ultimately meets Miss Right, and then finds out that she's a infamous axe murderess! Myers is ingratiating and hilarious in a second role as his own contrary Scottish dad however the film by no means switches into high gear. Cameos by such recognizable funny men as Charles Grodin, Steven Wright, Phil Hartman, and Michael Richards appear mainly unnecessary. Cast includes Mike Myers, Nancy Travis, Anthony LaPaglia, Amanda Plummer, Brenda Fricker, Debi Mazar, and Matt Doherty. (93 minutes, 1993)
Blessed Event: Tracy's most renowned role has him as a Walter Winchell mock-up whose fiery line makes him famous but also lands him in hot water. Cast includes Roy Del Ruth. Lee Tracy, Mary Brian, Dick Powell, Emma Dunn, Blunt McHugh, Allen Jenkins, Ned Kindles, and Ruth Donnelly. (81 minutes, 1932)
