The Beatles Remastered Box Sets
The Beatles studio albums were first digitally remastered for CD back in the late 1980s at that time digital mastering for CD was still a relatively new art and since the 80s much has been found out about how to master more effectively but even more important is that at that time the digital technology was still in it's infancy in comparison to today.
The many forward movements in digital mastering and all of the information learned on how to most effectively make digital masters have been put to good use with the Beatles remasters of 2009. On September 9, 2009 The Beatles released both The Beatles Stereo Box Set and The Beatles in Mono. And both remastered box sets sound lovely. If you've yet to hear 'em, I recommend you get your hands on The Beatles remasters as soon as you can.
Which flavor of remastered Beatles should you purchase? Well for me the answer was easy: "both of them" but if you can only afford you will probably go with the Beatles in Stereo since it includes all thirteen of their studio LPs and most fans really do want to listen to the stereo versions more than the mono.
The mono set is more for serious fans who want to hear all of the differences between the mono and stereo mixes (and in some cases they are very different from each other) and for fans who want to listen to The Beatles how they originally heard them (this obviously applies to older fans who were there for The Beatles in the flesh in the 1960s.)
As of December 8, 2009 there's a third choice: The Beatles USB Memory Stick. This USB memory stick includes the Beatles entire stereo remastered box set in a little thing you can easily hold in your hand. Isn't that cool? It holds all of their CDs in two formats; better than CD quality 24bit FLAC and 320kbps mp3s.
That "better than CD quality" bit is what will bring in the audiophiles but for most people it's the mp3s that'll be played the most. - 18758
