FAQ About Acoustic Guitar Lessons

By Tommy Beltrani

I have been teaching guitar for almost two decades and it's quite interesting to notice that beginner students have often the same questions. I hope this column will help some of you to understand some core strategies when you learn to play guitar. People often ask me about electric versus acoustic guitar lessons and I always advice starting with acoustic first. I have my good reasons for that:

Acoustic guitars are loud enough and you don't need any amplifier or pedals you would normally need if you play electric. That can save you quite a bit of money you could invest in online video tutorials or even a better instrument.

When you play acoustic guitar you don't need to worry about the many electric guitar techniques that might just be a huge distraction when you are starting out. You can focus on the basic techniques like chord changes, strumming and fingerpicking.

Strumming songs sounds better on acoustic guitar and it will definitely motivate you to practice more.

You can take your acoustic guitar everywhere you like without having to worry about amplification. That is very cool if you want to play at a school camp or friends home and don't want to worry about carrying around extra stuff.

Starting on an acoustic guitar will strengthen your hands because the stings are a bit harder to press than on an electric guitar. This is a great way to lay down a good foundation.

Another very common question is: "Should I buy a steel string or a nylon string?". Personally I believe it's all about the sound and style of music you are after. It would be nice to actually have them both but if it's not possible go for a nylon string guitar if you like spanish or classical music or you just want a more round sound. While if you play contemporary styles like blues, country, rock and fingerstyle then buy a steel string.

After you have been playing for a while and are comfortable playing song you can start considering getting yourself an electric guitar.

Playing a musical instrument is a very enjoyable activity and the effort you put in will soon pay off. Therefore keep on practicing as practice make perfect and at all times have fun in the process. - 18758
