Gibson Greats - The Flying V
If you think "rock guitar" you might begin to imagine a long haired rocker, hunched over his Gibson Flying V Guitar, pushing out an ear bleeding solo whilst fireworks shoot off all around him. This is the image of heavy rock!
The Gibson Flying V is certainly one of the rock guitars that will go down in history as being one of the most unique designs ever. Originally built and launched by the guitar company back in 1958 and then relaunched in 1967, the mahogany bodied flying V took the world of rock by storm.
The models that were created on and around 1967 are considered to be the classic design and are the most collectible amongst vintage guitar collectors. This older design is known as the V Factor rather than the flying V. Gibson does still make the guitar under the name of Tribal V and they also make a flying V bass guitar too!
You might find modern artists and bands like The Foo Fighters using a Flying V these days, but in it's time, the V has seen greats like Marc Bolan and Jimi Hendrix too. Jimi was notorious for using these guitars on stage and even has his own signature model that he chose to cover in a paisley pattern.
If you are a lover of all things Gibson and Flying V, then an original 1967 model will be top of your shopping list. There are plenty of them available to buy in various states of repair, so make sure you check out your local guitar shops or sites like eBay. There were only 350 Gibson Tribal V's produced, so getting hold of one of them might be a little more difficult.
The Gibson Tribal V is a newer, more up to date version of the older model with all new components and electronics. The modern, youth tribal tattoo markings and graphics make it stand out from the crowd too.
There have been other makers of the V style guitar through the years. Ibanez for one copied the look and design when they released their own version. Rumor has it that Gibson had to step in with their lawyers to prevent these guitars from being made and sold, such was the strength and quality of the copiers design.
The Flying V certainly has made its mark on the ethos and mythology of rock music and guitar based rock. Its image is immediately recognizable and the Gibson quality, design and perfection make the guitar one of the best rock guitars ever. - 18758
