Picking A New Set Of Pickups For Your Favorite Guitar

By Kyle Zoltowski

The harmonious and colorful pitch of electric guitars was the pinnacle of rock and roll. During the 50's, this type of music was being experimented with and then in the 60's and 1970's, that style was improved upon until it transformed into rock and roll. The crispness of sound that comes out of an electric guitar is like no other. It is amazing to wonder where music would have ended up if it hadn't been for the improvement upon the electric guitar; a terrible idea. A band that doesn't have an electric guitar is like a kid without its parents.

Electric guitars come in different contours, sizes, colors, and designs. Some think that it does not bear significance what electric guitar you get because they all are electric guitars. This is just false; brand, size, pickups, and neck all make a difference in the sound that comes from the electric guitar. Because of this, certain brands of electric guitars remained popular for decades because of the quality. Although, the most important part to the sound type is the pickups.

Whether starting a brand new band, jamming solo, or adding more guitars to your band's arsenal, you should become aware of the different types of pickups for electric guitars before you decide on one. Many instrument shops will let you you testing them and can be very helpful in giving information and assisting one in picking the most appropriate electric guitar. Make sure to get an explanation about the differences in pickups. Thekinds of pickups for electric guitars are:

* Single Coil Pickups - This type of pickup has a single coil. This kinds of pickup remains the oldest of electric guitar pickups. When jamming with a guitar that has a single coil pickup, the sound is compromised by other frequencies in the room which create a hum with the music. These types of pickups are usually not seen today but still the pickup for some very well known musicians because of the old style sound they give.

* Humbucker Pickups - This pickup is made from two coils wherein the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup was cancelled out. In essence, the coil processes two signals: one that the guitar is letting out and one that cancels out the hum. The actual piece in this arrangement is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is the process of two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups - These pickups, like the name, have two coils. But, for one reason, musicians do like the hum sound for certain songs so the double coil pickup electric guitars are usually made with a switch that can turn off the second coil.

There are many other factors that go into the sound an electric guitar provides. Though, pickups are the most essential component of sound. Other things for example: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners are also important for sound but not like the pickups. For a very long time, musicians have been toiling over creating the perfect guitar to make the perfect sound. Rock and roll has gotten different some ways but in many ways it has remained indifferent. - 18758
