We often talk about this performer or that performer being iconic, and sometimes its overstating things a bit, but not in the case of The Beatles. They wielded a powerful influence back in the '60's and the '70's, and that influence is nearly as strong today.

I grew up during the Beatles era, and everywhere that I have travelled around the world they are known, and loved. I remember being in a small nightclub in Thailand where there was a Chinese Beatles tribute band playing, and although I personally did not appreciate the sound that they produced, particularly the singing, they were immensely popular with the locals.

I remember once being on holiday in Peru, and half way up a mountain there was a group of Peruvians, playing their pipes, and the song they were singing - Love Me Do.

So, who were The Beatles?

To begin with I would really like to go back to basics. You see, many of our younger readers will not know very much about The Beatles, they will only have snippets of information, so you that are well read on this subject, please bare with me.

The Beatles originated in a Northern England town called Liverpool, and in those early days they were known as a pop group.

The make up of the group was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They all sung and played various guitars except Ringo who sung and played drums.

There are two more names which I need to give you, Pete Best, and Stuart Sutcliffe, these were members of the Beatles in the early days.

As far as style of music is concerned, I think they were initially influenced by skiffle, and then rock and roll, but over the years their style did evolve quite a bit.

But not only were they influenced by many different styles of music, but they also provided quite a direction for many of the groups that were around at that time.

And they also provided a direction to many young people of the day in the areas of clothes, and musical tastes.

When the Beatles broke up, in 1970, John, Paul, George and Ringo all embarked upon successful solo careers. This article has just been an introduction, and in future articles we will be looking in more detail at both the Beatles, collectively, and the individual careers they all followed.
