You will also have to learn how to bar chord. It is a painful process for most beginners because you have to improve the muscle strength of your fret hand to be able to do it even for a little while. This will also be a problem with the ends of your fingers that you use to press down the strings. It will take some time to develop calusses so this does not hurt if you play for any length of time. Keep practicing and you will get it.

Next on the list of to do's is to get a little knowledge of music theory. If you devote a couple hours a week, it will not take you very long to discover how to play along with any song if you know the key it is in. Grab a chord chart and begin memorizing every chord and every note on the guitar.

Learning this is key if you want to be able to jump right in and improve. You can do this because you will know which notes fit and which ones don't belong. The longer you do it, the easier it will get.
