Brief Review of the Breedlove C25/CR Herringbone

In its relatively brief existence, the Breedlove Guitar Company has gained a well-deserved reputation for top quality, easily-playable guitars.

These guitars, however, admittedly come with a premium cost. Breedlove is attempting to make its guitars more accessible through the critically acclaimed "Pro" series. One top instrument from this series is the C25/CR Herringbone Acoustic, which is much more affordable than its custom models, but is still a hugely well-made instrument.

With the Pro Series models, Breedlove saves the cost of production by assembling the models in the USA from parts that are machined in Korea. Don't think, though, that these cost-saving measures affect the quality of the models, because these "budget" Breedloves have many of the same treasured features as the US-only guitars. Breedlove saves much of the cost by limiting the number of customizations available. As an example, customers can choose from a Sitka Spruce or Cedar top, but those are the only options regarding the guitar's top. Similarly, customers can choose from a variety of different electronics options, but that's all. Despite the lack of choices, the guitar's appointments are very well done, from the abalone rosette to the herringbone trim.

The C25/CR Herringbone is a concert-sized guitar that is absolutely beautiful and demonstrates the caliber of this series of instruments. It sports an ebony fretboard on a slim, mahogany, one-piece neck. The instrument's wood is very high quality, with a dark cedar top and a rosewood back and sides. The nut is 1", which makes the instrument extremely easy to play. It also has a 2" spacing at the saddle, so the guitar is easily enjoyed by fingerstyle players and flatpickers alike.

Visually, the Breedlove C25/CR Herringbone is obviously cut from the same cloth as the higher-level Breedlove models. The unique cutaway and headstock coupled with the pinless, winged bridge make it clear what brand of guitar you're playing, despite the more affordable pricetag.

Regarding the sound, the Breedlove C25/CR Herringbone has the same lovely, full-bodied low end for which most Breedloves are renowned. The instrument has rich overtones and long, full sustain. While the bass response is very noticeable (and very beautiful) the C25/CR has a full, smooth lead tone overall that is reminiscent of a fine electric guitar more than an acoustic, though the guitar is capable of dulcet acoustic sounds as well. Still, the C25/CR excels as a "lead" instrument, from its full bass voice to its overall compressed sustain.

This Pro model is no slouch in the electronics department, either. The onboard L. R. Baggs Element system (the Dual Source Element system is optional) translates the guitar's broad myriad of tones extremely well and includes readily accessible volume and tone controls at the top of the soundhole. Recording the C25/CR into my Mac-based home Pro Tools studio demonstrates how well this guitar could serve the recording musician. The sounds were very "present" and clear.

Don't believe that because the C25/CR Herringbone doesn't have the same options as its more expensive brethren means that this instrument is of low quality. It is one of the finest instruments I've played in a long time. If you've ever wanted to try a Breedlove but were put off by the premium price tag, the Breedlove Pro Series is sure to please. - 18758
