The Beatles Second Record: With The Beatles (1963)

By Harold Donald Quesenberry

1963's With The Beatles is definitely not not the best Beatles studio album, in actuality I think it's probably their worst studio album. But that is not to imply I do not like listening to it in it's 2009 remastered form nor is it to say that this album does not have any good songs on it because because I definitely do and it definitely does.

But I do believe that when looking at only the eight Beatles originals on the record, it's arguably the worst selection of original songs the Fab Four ever released on an LP (the very underrated Beatles For Sale has a much better selection of eight originals) on the other hand, the covers on this album are quite good (better than the six covers on Beatles For Sale, which was their fourth album.)

My favorite Beatles originals to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs (stereo and mono) are the first three songs: "It Won't Be Long," "All I've Got To Do," and "All My Loving." In particular I have been loving song #2 "All I've Got To Do" in the remastered mono. It sounds delicious.

Another song that has actually been growing on me a bit is song #9, "Hold Me Tight." Paul McCartney wrote and sang this song and he's dismissed it as being an album filler. And while the song is a bit sloppy sounding, I think it has a certain charm.

Among the cover songs I think "Till There Was You" is my favorite. It's an extremely cheesy sickly sweet ballad but I think in some strange way it works because of that. The album closer, "Money" is an excellent way to end the record. When I listen close to the remastered mono version I actually hear the song as much more unhinged than I realized. It rocks pretty darn hard.

For most of the albums I do prefer the stereo mixes (particularly with the mid to late 60s albums) when it comes 2009 Beatles box sets but I do think that this CD sounds better in mono. - 18758
