2009: The Year of The Beatles Remastered

By Harold H. Quesenberry

It is hard for me to believe in many ways, but 2009 has definitely been really huge for the classic'60s band The Beatles (and Michael Jackson.) With the long awaited release of the remastered versions of their music on CD and in mp3 (on The Beatles USB) many Beatles fans dreams have come true this year.

The Beatles in Stereo Box Set

The most popular Beatles release of the year has been The Beatles in Stereo Box Set. It's been a huge unit shifter and for good reason. It contains the band's entire 1962-1970 discography in high quality digitally remastered stereo. These remastered Beatles albums sound absolutely wonderful (these discs are far superior to the 1980s Beatles discs you probably own at the moment.)

The biggest improvements compared to the old discs are heard in the way McCartney's bass cuts through the mix more so than ever before and Ringo's drums sound far better than they used to as well. Another big positive is being able to hear each individual vocal part with more clarity.

The Beatles in Mono CD Box Set

The release that has created the most excitement of hardcore Beatles fans is probably The Beatles Mono Box Set because it's the first time in many years that the original mono mixes of The Beatles music has been easily available.

Some "purist" Beatles fans believe that these mono mixes are really the way the band's music was supposed to be enjoyed and the purists have a good reason to believe that. Mono was what most Beatles fans listened to in the '60s and it was the mono mixes that the band and it's producers spent the most time perfecting. Meanwhile, the band spent almost no time working on the stereo mixes up until The White Album.

The Beatles Stereo USB Stick

This USB memory stick is basically a digital version of The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set. It includes both 320kbps mp3s and 24bit FLAC files. Along with the obvious audio component, this Apple USB memory stick also includes all of the visual parts of the box set such as the thirteen album documentaries, the extended liner notes for each album, and the photographs.

The USB stick is compatible with both PC and Mac computers. The mp3s should work with no issues with any mp3 player (whether it be an iPod, a Zune, or another machine.) - 18758
